The senior editors are so thrilled and proud to present the 2025 spring issue of UMBRA! With this being our final issue before graduation, we want to express our pride in the Creative Writing department and its collaborations. Being the first students to come back to campus after quarantine, we have seen the department both bounce back and expand in our collaborations and expressions. Our time as UMBRA editors has been meaningful for all of us, and the lessons we have learned from the Creative Writing department and UMBRA will carry us into our next steps.
This issue expresses our philosophy of writing as more than just putting words on a page. Inquisitive poetry and prose collected here explore themes of humanity, relationships, and the evolution of personal identity over the course of time.
The first Issue of 2025 brings the return of the PenUmbra Collaboration with Media Arts in addition to the revival of Jazz Poetry in the form of a Spring Collaboration in the Lupin Theater. We’re super excited to be working with multiple different departments and having the opportunities to bring Creative Writing into new fields dealing with the art of performing and sharing our work in a broader sense.
All of the artwork and the banner of this issue was created and provided by the Visual Arts Department. This issue wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and input of our Arts Directors, Emma Wahnsiedler and Trinity Smith. We want to include a big thanks to Isabella Jacobs who provided the artwork for this issue’s banner and logo. We absolutely fell in love with the image and feel it captures the essence of this issue perfectly.
Thank you to everyone who takes the time to support and read our work, and we hope you enjoy the issue!
Sincerely,
The UMBRA Editors.
